The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a significant update to the admission acceptance process for Nigerian tertiary institutions. This new system aims to streamline the procedure, reduce errors, and enhance overall efficiency. New Acceptance Process
JAMB has announced that all acceptance of admission offers will now be conducted through a simple shortcode: “55019”. This new method introduces two distinct ways for candidates to accept their admission offers:
Method 1: Unique Code via SMS
Candidates will receive a message containing a unique code. To accept the offer, candidates simply need to follow the instructions provided in the message.
Method 2: Direct Dial
Candidates can dial *55019*1# on their mobile phones to accept the admission offer directly.
Policy Alignment
JAMB has emphasized the importance of all tertiary institutions, especially private ones, aligning their admission policies with the national policy. This unified approach is designed to ensure consistency and fairness across the board. Institutions are required to “coagulate” their policies with Nigeria’s national policy, promoting a standardized admission process nationwide.
Age Requirements
For the 2024 academic year, candidates who are 16 years old will be considered for admission into tertiary institutions. However, starting from the next academic year, the minimum entry age will be raised to 18 years.
Updated Cutoff Marks
JAMB has also released the minimum cutoff marks for various types of institutions:
- Universities: 140
- Polytechnics: 100
- Colleges of Education: 100
It’s important to note that while these are the minimum requirements, some prestigious universities such as the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), and the University of Ibadan (UI) may set higher cutoff marks, typically around 200.

Candidates are advised not to reach out to individual schools for now. The specific cutoff marks and admission requirements for each institution will be communicated by the schools themselves in due course.
