The Life Changer – Chapter 1 Summary & Questions

The Life Changer – Chapter 1

Summary

Chapter 1 of The Life Changer introduces Ummi and her family. Omar, the first child and only son,
brings exciting news of his admission to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, with a JAMB score of 230. Bint, the
youngest child, is curious and quick-witted, often surprising adults with her questions, such as her query to
her teacher about saying “that’s very good” in French. Teemah and Jamila, Ummi’s other daughters, play their
roles in the family dynamic, showcasing their unique personalities. The chapter highlights family values,
aspirations, and the importance of education.

Ummi’s occupation as a teacher influences her parenting style, such as entering her children’s room without
knocking to instill discipline and cleanliness. Omar dreams of being celebrated with an Android smartphone
and insists on being called “My Learned Brother” by his siblings. Themes of respect, knowledge, and ambition
